Fuel Hours for Emergency Generators

For how many hours of run time is an emergency generator required to be fueled? EC.1.7.1 only states that a generator is required to have “adequate fuel supplies for emergency use and sustained operation.”

Joint Commission standards do not specify a length of time or an amount of fuel. Several considerations should be factored in when determining the amount, such as the time it might take to obtain a resupply of fuel, which could depend on the facility’s geographic location, logistics, potential severe weather conditions, and so forth. NFPA 99 and NFPA 110 can provide some guidance in this regard.  The run time could vary anywhere from 24 to 96 hours.
