Penetrations in 2-HR Fire Barriers

What does a penetration in a 2-hour fire barrier have to be sealed with in order to maintain fire resistance?

Penetrations such as pipes, conduits, cables, and wires that pass through 2-hour fire barriers shall be filled with a material that is capable of maintaining the fire resistance of the fire barrier; or it shall be protected by an approved device that is designed for the specific purpose.  Be sure to consult your local standards before making a final decision on any fire protection product, as building and fire codes vary between jurisdictions.  Penetrations protected to maintain the fire resistance of the fire barrier wall are by default capable of limiting the transfer of smoke where the barrier also must meet the smoke barrier provisions.
