Do ILSMs apply to Business occupancies? If so, where in NFPA-101 are they required?
ILSMs are not specifically required nor specifically addressed by TJC standards for business occupancies. Also, TJC doesn’t mandate compliance with the Life Safety Code®. Therefore, a TJC accredited business occupancy would have to maintain a safe environment during periods of construction/renovations or until some fire safety issue is resolved.
A risk assessment should be performed to determine the extent of any remedial or temporary actions to be performed. While not mandated for a business occupancy, there would be nothing wrong with adopting some ILSMs out of the hospital accreditation manual if and when needed.
