A hospital has a data room suppression system that is not sprinklered, but the rest of the facility is sprinklered. Would TJC still consider the hospital to be fully sprinklered?
If the data room suppression system meets the below 2000 NFPA 101®Life Safety Code® requirements, the hospital should be fine with The Joint Commission. However, if the system does not meet the below-listed criteria, then TJC would not consider the hospital to be fully sprinklered.
9.7.3* Other Automatic Extinguishing Equipment.
9.7.3.1
In any occupancy where the character of the potential fuel for fire is such that extinguishment or control of fire is effectively accomplished by a type of automatic extinguishing system other than an automatic sprinkler system, such as water mist, carbon dioxide, dry chemical, foam, Halon 1301, water spray, or a standard extinguishing system of another type, that system shall be permitted to be installed in lieu of an automatic sprinkler system. Such systems shall be installed, inspected, and maintained in accordance with appropriate NFPA standards.
9.7.3.2
If the extinguishing system is installed in lieu of a required, supervised automatic sprinkler system, the activation of the extinguishing system shall activate the building fire alarm system, where provided. The actuation of an extinguishing system that is not installed in lieu of a required, supervised automatic sprinkler system shall be indicated at the building fire alarm system, where provided.
