Evacuation Maps

Are evacuation maps required to be posted in health care organizations? If so, where? And how many are needed?


Neither Joint Commission standards nor the NFPA 101 Life Safety Code®* require that evacuation maps be posted in hospitals or other health care occupancies. However, there have been cases in which local or state fire marshals have required such maps. If another authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) mandates the posting of such maps, then the Joint Commission would expect compliance with that AHJ.
