Does The Joint Commission require signage above recessed fire extinguisher cabinets?
No. However, if your portable fire extinguishers are not easily discernable or readily visible from certain locations, you could have a problem.
According to the National Fire Protection Association's Life Safety Code – which Joint Commission surveyors follow – extinguisher locations must be identified. However, NFPA 10 (which covers portable fire extinguishers) offers only suggestions, not requirements. A sign is one of several suggested ideas, the NFPA says.
Another myth is that signs must be placed above extinguisher cabinets so that the general public will know their location. This is not the case as only trained staff or fire fighters should use your fire extinguishers, although staff must know the location of extinguishers in their areas.
If an extinguisher in a recessed cabinet is not readily visible as you look up and down a corridor, you should consider some signage.
