Corridor Doors Blocked

Are wedges/door stops and kick-downs non-compliant when used on corridor doors that have closers on them?

Yes. Door wedges have been outlawed for decades and kick-downs can be as dangerous and can cause the doors to jamb or get wedged in a position resulting in the door being stuck. Corridor doors are to be side-hinged, free swinging doors requiring only one operation for opening. Per the Life Safety Code, corridor doors not leading to hazardous areas or protecting vertical openings are not required to have self-closures and they may be removed.

One suggestion is to provide staff education on the importance of complying with TJC LS requirements and the Life Safety Code®, especially with regards to freedom of movement to an area of safe refuge in an emergency situation.
