What is TJC's stance on the use of open flame devices, such as sterno cans used to keep food hot? My director said that there can be no use of open flame devices in a hospital. Is this correct and where is the standard? Does this also apply to candles in a chapel?
Caution should always be used obviously, however, I’m not aware of any restrictions for use as you have described below. Although care should definitely be taken, there are no specific TJC or LSC prohibitions regarding the use of sterno (or candles in chapels) in health care occupancies. Local or state AHJ’s may have a different opinion, so your organization needs to check with them also.
