Patient Lift Testing

Is it required to test patient lifts annually?

This depends on the manufacturer's recommendations and upon the facility's risk assessment, which should include any prior occurrences/incidents (which in turn may require a more frequent PM schedule).  Lifts needs to be included in the inventory and broken down to separate those lifts that are used for bariatric patients. Below are guidelines for the inspections from the US Department of Labor.

Preventive maintenance checks, services and repairs for Patient Lifts - Healthcare Facility

The Preventive Maintenance Check & Service must include as a minimum the following items in accordance with manufacturer specifications and standards so as to protect and ensure compliance with manufacturer warranty and maintenance requirements:

1) Inspect frames, interlocks, hardware, gears for wear, connection joints for proper attachment, trolley and spreader bars.
2) Verify emergency brake and braking devices are working properly.
3) Load testing of all lifts.
4) Inspect all track and end stops and torque end stops to manufacturer specifications.
5) Inspect and ensure ceiling brackets and mounting hardware are not displaced and all mountings and attachments meet manufacturer guidelines and health and safety requirements.
6) Inspect all areas required by the manufacturer utilizing the latest manufacturer published updates so that equipment maintains the warrant and ensures patient and hospital staff safety.
